·
Initially the GOVT. instuited Bharat ratna &
Padma vibhushan in 1954. The latter was divide into 3 parts- Pahela varg, Dusra
varg & Tisra varg. Then it was finally renamed as Padma vibhushan, Padma
bhushan & Padma shri(Decreasing order of importance) in 1955

Announced every year on the occasion of Republic
day except for brief interruption in 1978-79 & 1993-97

Government servants including those working in
PSU’s except doctors & scientists are not eligible for this awards
