                                   INDIAN HONOUR SYSTEM

              System of awards given to the individuals for their service to the REPUBLIC OF INDIA
·         Categorised as :
1.  Civilian awards
  a. Bharat Ratna
·         Highest civilian award of the country
·         Instuited in 1954
·         Recommendations for Bharat ratna are made by the Prime minister to the President
·         Maximum 3 nominees can be awarded in a year
·         Bharat ratna recipients are 7th in Indian order of precedence
·         C.Rajagopalachari, Sarvapalli Radhakrishna & CV Raman- First recipients
·         Sachin tendulkar- Youngest recipient
·         Lal Bahadur Shastri- First person to be awarded posthumously
·         Subhash Chandra Bose- Award announced but not conferred
b. Padma Awards
·         Instuited in 1954
·         Initially the GOVT. instuited Bharat ratna & Padma vibhushan in 1954. The latter was divide into 3 parts- Pahela varg, Dusra varg & Tisra varg. Then it was finally renamed as Padma vibhushan, Padma bhushan & Padma shri(Decreasing order of importance) in 1955
·         Announced every year on the occasion of Republic day except for brief interruption in 1978-79 & 1993-97
·         Government servants including those working in PSU’s except doctors & scientists are not eligible for this awards
·         Presented by the President
             
            2. Military awards
                            a. Wartime Gallantry award
·         Param Vir Chakra-    (1) Highest military award
                                                    (2) Equivalent to “Medal of honour ”in USA & “Victoria                                                                 Cross”in UK
                                                    (3) Till now has been given to only 21 people
                                                    (4) Only armed personals are awarded PVC
                                                    (5) Established in 26th jan 1950
                                                    (6) Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of PVC
·         Maha Vir Chakra- (1) Second highest military award
                                  (2) Replaced the British Distinguished Service Order(DSO)
·         Vir Chakra- (1) Third in precedence in war time gallantry awards
                      (2) Abbreviation used is Vr.C(to distinguish from Victoria Cross) 
 
  b. Peace time gallantry award
·         Ashok Chakra- (1) Highest peacetime award
                                        (2) Can be given to both armed personals & civilians
                                        (3) Replaced British George Cross
·         Kirti Chakra- (1) Second in precedence in peacetime gallantry awards
                                      (2) Established in 1952 as Ashok Chakra class II
                                        (3) Name was changed to Kirti Chakra in 1967
·         Shaurya Chakra- (1) Third in order.
                                           (2) Established in 1952 as Ashok chakra class III then name                                                            was changed in 1967.

·         Sena medal/ Nao Sena medal/ Vayu Sena medal-  Established in 1960 by President of India

      3. LEADERSHIP AWARDS
·                                             Gandhi Peace prize- 1. Founded in 1995
                                  2. Annual award with cash prize upto 1 crore
                                  3. Jury consists of PM, Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Chief                                           justice of India and other two people
·                                          Indira Gandhi Prize- 1. First awarded in 1986
                                          2. Cash prize is 2.5 million Indian rupees
                                          3. Jury consists of members of Indira Gandhi Memorable Trust
       4. Literature Awards
  •    Jnanpith Award- 1.the highest literary honour in India. 
                                          2. Instuited in 1961 and is given only to only Indian authors writing in                                                           languages mentioned in 8th schedule of Constuition. 
                                          3.G Sankara Krurup was the first person awarded.

                                                  3.Vishwanathan anand was the first recipient of the award                                                                   andAbhinav bindra the youngest recipient of the award.
                                                  4.Karnam Malleshwari was the first women recipient.
·         Dronacharya award- First awarded in 1985 to Bhalachandra Bhaskar Bhagwat.

·         Dhyan Chand Award- 1. AKA Dhyan Chand award for lifetime achievement in sports and                                                    games.

                                                                      2. Instuited in 2003. 
                                                                      3.11 member jury with Vice president as chairman                                                                       and External affairs minister as vice chairman                                                                           and nine other distinguished members was made                                                                     to honour 30 nominations of this award as of                                                                             2017.
